Getting Started

Your first visits

We take time to understand your concerns, explain what we find, and create a plan that fits your goals.

What can I expect at my first visit?

Your therapist will review your medical history and talk with you about your current concerns and symptoms. A physical examination may be performed, so dressing comfortably is helpful.

We will explain the findings, provide a verbal assessment, and review your individualized plan of care—including the recommended frequency of future visits. You will also leave with practical exercises or recommendations to begin at home.

What kinds of concerns do you treat?

We treat a wide range of pelvic floor concerns. These include pregnancy- and postpartum-related pain or weakness, pubic symphysis and groin pain, urinary leakage, urgency, constipation, dyssynergic defecation, pelvic pain, painful intercourse, and pelvic floor–related hip or back pain.

We also work with patients whose symptoms relate to conditions such as PCOS, interstitial cystitis, endometriosis, and infertility.

Do you treat men?

Yes. Approximately 10–15% of our patients are men. We commonly treat pelvic pain, muscle spasm, and urinary concerns.

Do you treat pediatric pelvic floor patients?

Yes. We see a small pediatric population. We typically begin with a consultation with the parent to determine whether Haven is the best fit for the child. If another provider would be more appropriate, we will help guide the family toward the right care.

How long will I need physical therapy?

The length of care depends on your diagnosis, symptom severity, how long the symptoms have been present, other health conditions, and consistency with exercises and recommendations.

On average, patients should expect at least eight visits over the course of a few months. Long-standing pelvic floor concerns may take longer to rehabilitate.

Treatment & Comfort

You remain in control

Pelvic health care should feel respectful, collaborative, and comfortable. Your therapist will explain each step and honor your preferences.

I am pregnant and want to be proactive. How many visits will I need?

Pregnant patients come to Haven for different reasons. Some attend two or three visits to prepare their pelvic floor for labor and delivery. Others have pain or weakness that benefits from more frequent care during the second and third trimesters.

We usually stop seeing pregnant patients around 36–37 weeks unless there is a specific symptom that still needs support.

What if I have my period?

You do not need to cancel your appointment. Many patients attend while they have their period. Internal assessment or treatment can be deferred if you prefer. Your comfort and preferences always guide the visit.

Do I need to have an internal examination?

No. You are always in control during every visit. Your therapist will explain the purpose of each assessment or treatment option, and you may decline or stop any part of the visit at any time.

Will I stay with the same therapist?

We aim for patients to stay with the same therapist approximately 85% of the time. If your therapist is fully booked during a particular week, we may offer an appointment with another Haven therapist so you can remain consistent with your plan of care—especially during the first six weeks of rehabilitation.

Scheduling & Policies

Making care work

Consistency matters, but we understand that life happens. Here is what to know about children, scheduling, and late changes.

I have an emergency. Will I still be charged a late-cancellation fee?

The cancellation fee is never intended as a punishment. Each Haven therapist works one-on-one with one patient per visit, so advance notice allows us to offer the appointment to someone on our waiting list.

If you need to change an appointment on the day of your visit, the system may automatically charge the late-cancellation fee. A telehealth visit may also be an option. Please speak with our front office team if you experienced an emergency.

Can I bring my child if I do not have a babysitter?

Yes. Children are welcome. If you prefer that your child not be in the treatment room, they must be old enough to sit safely in the waiting area without your supervision.

Can I space my sessions over several weeks or months?

Most gains are made early in rehabilitation, and consistent visits generally support better progress than occasional appointments. If attending regularly is difficult, ask your therapist whether a hybrid plan that includes telehealth could help you stay guided between in-person visits.
